What is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is a form of complementary therapy that utilises the power of positive suggestion to bring about subconscious change to our thoughts, feelings and behaviour. It is used to help with a variety of problems including breaking bad habits, fears & phobias, coping with stress, anxiety and any events which may be holding us back.
How does Hypnotherapy work?
The process itself is a level of relaxation which relaxes the conscious part of the mind while simultaneously stimulating and focusing the subconscious part. This heightened state of awareness (hypnosis) is reached using skilled relaxation techniques and allows me as the therapist to then make appropriate suggestions. It is the only way to access your subconscious mind.
Am I in Control?
During Hypnotherapy, you are completely conscious, if you chose to, you could open your eyes, move or speak at anytime, but you won’t want to as you will be enjoying complete relaxation. Hypnotherapy, is simply a deeply relaxed state and you remain in control. A therapist cannot make you do anything, in fact it is important to understand that this is a consent therapy and therefore requires you to want to make improvements for the process to work.
A Hypnotherapist cannot make you do something you do not wish to do as your
subconscious mind will protect you. The primary function of the subconscious mind and its most important task, is for survival and to protect you at all times, your subconscious mind works 24/7.
How does the conscious and subconscious mind work?
Think of the conscious mind as your everyday mind, which makes up 10% of your mind and this is the part of your mind which makes the everyday decisions on what to wear, what to eat, where to go etc.
Your subconscious mind, which makes up the remaining 90% of your mind, is he part of your mind which stores all kinds of files, from a memory bank of your past to your emotional spectrum, your thoughts, feelings, values and beliefs.
Hypnotherapy does not change your memories, it upgrades how you feel about them, removing any negative feelings you have which are holding you back in your present life. Hypnotherapy is used to neutralise the negativity in any past memory, enabling you to learn and take any positives to empower you in the future, being free from anything holding you back today.
This upgrading can only be accomplished in the subconscious for that is where memories are stored and it can only be reached through the bypass of the conscious mind, which can only be done in hypnosis. Basically hypnotherapy keeps the conscious mind busy so I can talk to your subconscious mind and upgrade the computer programs of your mind, to ensure they are serving you.
We have degree’s of self hypnosis on a daily basis where we have driven somewhere and not remembered every turn and junction. We have been so absorbed in watching a film, we feel so in tune with it, we cry at sad scenes, feel scared at the scary frightening parts etc. This is where the subconscious mind has taken over and the conscious mind has switched off. Demonstrating that your subconscious is engaged and relating to your memory of how to drive a familiar route or accessing your emotions when absorbed in a good film or book.
What is Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP)?
Breaking it down, Neuro refers to your brain, thinking and neurology, how you process information and experience the world. Linguistic refers to the language you use and how you process this information by using your five senses and intuition. Programming refers to your patterns of behaviour and gives you the tools for you to replace negative behaviours and achieve the desired outcomes you wish.
So NLP is about modelling best practices, it is the study of excellence about finding out what we or others do when we are at our best, so we can model the excellence, to gain the best results for yourself. It works on the principle that everyone has all the resources they need to make positive changes in their own life and uses the link between how you think, speak and behave to enable you to make changes or upgrade your thoughts, language and patterns of behaviour to create better results. I will work with you by coaching you to develop choices of responses or communication in a given situation to be your best. NLP can be used to enhance how you behave at work, in relationships, belief in yourself and releasing any negative emotions which are holding you back from being your best.
